Jogo do Pau Português brings us the untold story of the only Portuguese martial art still alive today. It is a centuries-old martial art that few people know about, but which is at the root of our history. Jogo do Pau emerged from medieval battlefields and confrontations in villages, fairs and pilgrimages. The weapon used is the stick, accessible to all, but requiring mastery and technique passed down through generations of combat masters.

Until the early 20th century, studying with a Jogo do Pau master was a privilege for those who wanted to learn combat techniques. But the prohibition of its practice by the Salazar regime in the 1940s put Jogo do Pau at risk of extinction, were it not for the dedication and perseverance of a few masters.

Despite the upheavals of the last century, the history of Jogo do Pau survives to this day, with a few dedicated masters and practitioners, and is narrated here for the first time. More than an ancient form of combat, Jogo do Pau is a bold technique that echoes our history.
